Superintendent's News

March 2010

Dear Students, Parents, Faculty, Staff, and Community Members:

I have been using the venue of CairoGlyphics to update you on the four major initiatives taking place this year; Multiple Intelligence and Student Support Services, Cultural Diversity and International Relations, our Master Plan Building Project, and Value Added Instruction. It is important to keep these issues in the forefront, as international schools such as CAC are not only busy places, but also have an inherent transient nature. While we do have a population of families that remain many years at CAC, statistics show that approximately 30% of our families transition each year.

In my view, the most important part of one of our initiatives, Value Added Instruction, is the quality of our teachers. This is the time of year international schools are very involved with, and often are winding down, the recruiting season. Here at CAC, we have had an outstanding recruiting year. Thus, it is the time of year we begin to celebrate the contributions of those teachers who will be moving on from CAC, and to welcome new members to our community. I would like to take this opportunity to share information about our Administrative hires who will be joining us in August.

As you may be aware, we have flown several candidates to Cairo for the Business Manager and Elementary School Principal positions. We have also interviewed countless candidates for the Assistant High School Principal vacancy. Our hires represent hours of screening, reference checking, and teamwork by our Human Resources department, Principals and Assistant Principals, and in the case of the Elementary Principal candidates, an internal Search Committee (composed of current ES teachers and administrators) . Valuable feedback was also provided by faculty, staff, parents, board members and students. This group effort has resulted in a very positive outcome for CAC. The following international educators will be joining our administrative team, detailed in the order they were hired:

Business Manager: Rebecca Brown will be coming to Cairo as the new Business Manager. Rebecca has spent the last five years as Finance and Operations Director in Warsaw, Poland. Prior to assuming that role, Rebecca was a teacher and librarian in Vermont. Rebecca continues the tradition of a strong education background and excellent business, management, and presentation skills in that office. Rebecca will be coming on her own, but we can expect visits to Cairo from her adult family.

HS Assistant Principal: Mike Shuetze returns to internal education after a hiatus as a supervisor of student teaching in Arizona. Mike has been an Assistant Principal and Principal internationally, and his skill set in the area of curriculum design and development, and instructional supervision are outstanding. Mike is joined by his wife, Carolyn, who has worked internationally as a school librarian and is sure to contribute in and around CAC when she arrives.

ES Principal: Tony Moniz made a strong impression on the staff, parents, administration, and especially the students with his guitar playing! Tony emerged from a very large pool of interested candidates from both international and national systems, and greatly impressed our Search Committee with his poise and approachable demeanor. He is joining us from the Principalship in Casablanca, and his skills in backward design, team building, and inclusive decision making will continue the positive direction and programs in our Elementary school. His wife, Deanna, also an experienced international educator, will take up a position teaching in the Elementary school.

I do enjoy the rigor and high energy of recruiting, as well as the opportunity to share our wonderful school with others in the world. It is amazingly invigorating to talk about our initiatives, our learning community, and our focus on improvement and student learning. More on all of our teacher hires in the next edition of CairoGlyphics!

All the Best,

Robert Mockrish, Ph.D.
Superintendent
